Pumpkin carving is on everyone’s to-do list this season. With Halloween coming up and autumn taking its course, it’s all about spooky things, haunting bakes, cosy jumpers and pumpkins! If you’re holding a Halloween gathering this year, add pumpkin carving to your list of activities. Read on for how to carve a pumpkin!

Step 1 – Gather all your equipment

Carving your pumpkin won’t be possible if you don’t have the necessary tools. So, make sure you have everything from the list below.

  • A large pumpkin
  • Big and small serrated knives
  • A large serving spoon
  • A marker
  • A tea light

Step 2 – Cut the crown

If you haven’t already, buy a pumpkin from your local supermarket. There’s usually a range you can choose from, such as large and small pumpkins, as well as ghost pumpkins! Once you’ve chosen the perfect pumpkin for you, cut the crown off using a large serrated knife. If you’ve opted for a smaller pumpkin, use a small knife instead. Cut the crown in a circular motion by rotating the pumpkin.

If you’re having trouble with this, grab your marker and draw around the stem. You can then proceed to follow the marker as a guide to cut the crown off, but make sure the circular shape is big enough for your hand to enter through.

Step 3 – Scoop out its insides

The next step is to scoop everything out of your pumpkin. This means the fibres, seeds and other filling. You can use your large serving spoon to do this (or your hands if you want to get messy). Make sure your pumpkin is scraped clean and you’re good to go!

Step 4 – Draw a face

Now, for the creative bit… Grab your marker and draw any face you want on your pumpkin! They can be as menacing and frightening as you want. It’s all up to you. If you’re stuck, there are many designs available online that can be your inspiration. Once done, take your small serrated knife and cut the face out.

Step 5 – Give it life!

Make your pumpkin come to life by popping in a tea light and lighting it! Put the crown back on and watch the shadows dance… If you want a creepy effect, place your pumpkin somewhere eerily dark. The most popular choice is placing pumpkins on the front porch.
