A bit about Fleet

Fleet is a town and civil parish in the Hart District of Hampshire, with a population of 42,223 (2020 Census).

Originally a heathland, it is believed Fleet was derived from the Norman French word La Fiete meaning a stream which is a reference to the Fleet Pond; the largest freshwater lake in Hampshire.

As well as the Fleet Pond, another local landmark is the High Street which has many Victorian and Edwardian buildings.

For five consecutive years, Hart, of which Fleet is its main town) was voted the best place to live in the UK by the Halifax Quality of Life Study. The leading factors for this are the highly affluent majority of the population, high levels of access to leisure space, the surrounding countryside and better weather. Another keynote is that Hart has the highest percentage of residents in good health, scoring 97.4% compared to the UK average of 94.6%.

Fleet has ten junior and infant schools, two secondary schools and an independent girl’s only school. Secondary School Court Moor has a plethora of notable alumni including 2004 kayaking Olympic Bronze Medallist Helen Reeves.

The town’s largest event is the Fleet Carnival which takes place in the summer and other annual events include the Fleet 10k, a fireworks night, the Elvetham Heath Car Show and a beer festival organised by the local Lions Club.

Notable residents of Fleet include BAFTA TV award-winning actor Juliet Aubrey, ex-professional tennis player John Feaver, racing drivers Jack Mitchell and Dan Welch, and former drummer of rock band The Sundays; Patrick Hannan.

In sport, Fleet is home to North Hants Golf Club which is known as a top-ranked course nationally. The town also has four non-league football clubs; Fleet Town FC, Fleet Spurs FC, Fleet Albion and FC Fleet.
