Local charity shows how to have your cake and eat it too!

East Kent Mencap are making the most of being chosen as a cause for the Co-op’s Local Community Fund. In April, Community Fundraising Officer, Demi Price, and manager Jane Brooke; were joined by David, a keen volunteer who regularly attends sessions at their Thanet Resource Centres to attend their local store on Grange Road in Ramsgate. They held an Easter extravaganza in store, selling seriously scrumptious cakes and bakes, alongside a tombola with fantastic prizes!

On the day, the fundraising team were greeted with copious amounts of Easter themed treats that were handmade and donated by Co-op staff to help raise funds. Staff had also put together a stunning hamper that was raffled off, with all proceeds given to the local charity.

Community Fundraising Officer, Demi Price said: ‘This was my first fundraiser on behalf of East Kent Mencap. The staff at Co-op, particularly Darren and Jo, were incredibly generous to us and provided everything we needed and more! It is evident that a lot of local people are willing to support everything we do as a charity, and that felt really special. Thanks to the enthusiastic staff team, and exceptionally generous customers, we raised a huge £221.00 that we can now put towards our Summer Festival, thank you Co-op!’

David, who volunteered on the day said: ‘Thank you so much for inviting me, it was the best day of my life.’

With new and regular faces coming into store, it was a wonderful opportunity for the local charity to not only raise funds, but also to spread the vision and ethos of East Kent Mencap and allow people within the local community to understand more about the fantastic services they provide for adults and children with a learning disability, all over a slice of cake, too!

East Kent Mencap are part of the Co-op Local Community Fund up until October 2019 and are working alongside the Grange Road store to plan and organise many more events throughout the year ahead.
