Book of the month – The Stranger by Kate Riordan

Cornwall 1940 – Penhallow Hall shelters a handful of Land Girls, sent to the coast to avoid the Blitz. But long-buried secrets are stirred up amongst the sleepy village. When a young woman’s body is found lying broken on the shore, the promised safety of the Hall is shattered. Was it an accident, or did mischief end in murder?

Home Library Service volunteering

Volunteering feels good!

Would you like to make a real difference to people’s lives? We’re looking for volunteers to help deliver our Home Library Service, bringing the library to people who can’t get there owing to age, disability or caring responsibilities.

You’ll be their link to the library delivering a selection of books, audio books and DVDs and sharing information on other relevant services in the community.

If you’ve a passion for reading that you want to share or would just like to meet new people and make friends, then take a look at this great opportunity to support your community.

Naxos Music Library

Did you know that you can access millions of music tracks through the library? Naxos Music Library is the world’s largest online classical music library offering streaming access with your library card. Jazz, world, and pop/rock are also included in the collection.

Try some of the predefined playlists for an introduction to music of different genres, kids’ favourites, or music used in film and TV productions.

It’s also a great resource for music students to broaden their musical knowledge with a vast array of background information available, including synopses of over 700 operas, a pronunciation guide for composer and artist names, an overview of important musical terms, and much more.

Listen to whole albums or individual tracks – it’s your choice!

Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019

The Reading Agency and libraries are excited to introduce Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019; an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Children are being asked to read six books to help our super space family, the Rockets, track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! As they read library books, they will solve clues and collect special stickers to complete their mission folder. After reading their books they earn their Space Chase certificate and medal. Can they find the aliens in time to save the day?

The challenge runs from Saturday 20 July to Monday 2 September in all Essex libraries. Children can sign up for this mission anytime during this period and preparations are already underway to make sure this year’s activity is a real blast!

Are your contact details up to date?

We’re always trying to improve our library services, so it’s important that we have your most up to date contact details so that we can keep in touch; let you know of any new services, or changes to existing ones and so we can notify you when your reservations are ready for collection.

When was the last time you checked or updated your contact details? Have you stopped receiving reservation alerts, or perhaps you would like to receive notifications in a more convenient way, through an email or text message, rather than a letter?

By providing an email address, you will also be able to receive exclusive notifications that remind you two days before your items are due and gives you instant confirmation when reserving or renewing items. These services will be implemented in May / June 2019 and by updating your email address now you will automatically start receiving these messages when the new alerts are launched.

It’s easy to check and update your personal information. You can do it by signing in online, by asking a member of staff in your local library to update it for you, or by getting in touch.
