New exhibition showcases artwork from the past and present

Summer Reading Challenge 2018

A group of alumni from the Medway College of Art visited Medway Adult Education in Rochester to catch up with old classmates and to view a new exhibition of their work.

The Creatives 59’ exhibition showcases students’ work from 1959 and the early 1960s alongside contemporary pieces.

On Friday, 14 September a group of alumni who studied at the Medway College of Art from 1959 to 1965 came together for a reunion at Medway Adult Education, in the Rochester Community Hub building, where the college was previously based.

Work from current Medway Adult Education learners is also displayed alongside the group’s artwork. One of the artists, who is featured in the exhibition, was a student in 1960 who has returned to painting and has been taking Medway Adult Education courses.

Medway Adult Education will also run a series of retro art workshops in the coming months.

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “We were pleased to welcome the alumni from the Medway College of Art to the Adult Education Centre on Friday, 15 September. The Creatives ’59 exhibition not only celebrates the talent and accomplishments of past alumni but also the lasting friendships they formed whilst studying in Rochester. Our adult education centres offer a broad range of courses and I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning something new or polishing up on old skills to contact the team and find out more.”

Members of the public can view the Creatives ’59 exhibition from Monday, 17 September, to Friday, 26 October.
