Three free events will be held in Seaford, Peacehaven and Ditchling to celebrate the centenary of the women’s suffrage movement.

One hundred years ago, the Representation of the People Act gave some women over the age of 30 the vote for the first time and marked the start of the movement that campaigned for the right of every woman to vote.

Lewes District Council is organising the events to encourage women to participate in local government. There will be an informal discussion with a cross party group of women councillors and a mini exhibition on the suffragist movement in Sussex.

The first event will be held at the Clinton Centre, Seaford, on Wednesday 3 October, from 5pm to 7.30pm and the second will be in conjunction with Peacehaven Town Council at the Meridian Centre, Peacehaven, on Thursday 1 November from 5pm to 7pm. The final event will be at Ditchling Village Hall on Tuesday 4 December from 5pm to 6.30pm.

The events were the idea of Councillor Sarah Osborne who said: “We need more women in positions of authority and leadership and I hope that as many women as possible will come along to these free events to find out more about what being a councillor is all about.”
