World Encephalitis Day 2019

Encephalitis, is little-known to many of us.  In fact, statistics show that across the globe, 78% of people do not know what the potentially life-threatening disease is.

In short, encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain which can be contracted either from infection, or through the immune system, attacking the brain in error.

There are up to 6,000 cases a year in the UK alone and possibly hundreds of thousands worldwide and anyone of any age can be affected by the disease.  Initial symptoms are flu-like but more serious signs can take weeks to show.  These can include; high temperature, seizures, mild confusion, loss of consciousness and coma.

Several tests may be required as symptoms don’t always confirm encephalitis as other diseases can mimic the condition.  Tests can include; lumbar puncture, brain scans and blood tests.

Given the lack awareness, the Encephalitis Society set up a global awareness day (today – 22nd Feb) which is now in its sixth year.  The day’s aim is to bring together people who have been affected by the disease (personally affected or have friends or family who have been), to share stories, experiences, what to expect and what support is out there.

Together, we can all help the cause to save lives and make real change.  Share on social media, tell your friends and family and donate if you can.

If you’d like to help change the global perception of this disease and create a new level of awareness, you can donate to Encephalitis Society here: Donate Now
