It’s Time to Talk About Mental Health

CommunityAd Trades - Charities - two cups of coffee with word art on it for Time to Talk Day

The 3rd of February marks Time to Talk Day! In partnership with Co-op, Time to Talk Day is run by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, and aims to create communities where talking about mental health with family, friends or colleagues is supported. This day also aims to encourage communities to talk more about mental health with many organisations joining in. These are organisations such as the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH), See Me Scotland, Inspire, Change Your Mind and Time to Change Wales!

If you’d like to participate in this campaign and know how you can encourage mental health conversations, read on!

Why is it important to talk about mental health?

  • A lot of people have mental health problems. In fact, one in 4 will experience a mental health issue in any given year, according to experts.
  • Some people find it hard to talk about their mental health problems. By talking about mental health more, you’re getting rid of any stigma and making individuals feel more comfortable.
  • Talking about mental health can help us learn how to support others better, as well as ourselves.

Different ways you can start a conversation

Consider asking twice

Many individuals say they’re okay when they’re not, so asking twice can help you start a conversation on mental health. This is also a good way to let someone know that you’re genuinely interested in knowing about what’s going on with them. Even if they don’t want to talk about it just yet, you’re letting them know that you’re available to lend an ear when they’re ready.

Text or email them

When we’re talking about opening up to others, talking face to face is usually preferred. Talking to someone in person can let you know what they’re actually feeling since you get to see their facial expressions and give them a hug if necessary. However, there are some people who find it easier to open up through text or email. If the person you want to reach out to prefers texting, ping them a message on their preferred platform. For example, send a message through Snapchat or WhatsApp. Any social media site can also achieve this.

Share how you’re feeling

Since it can be difficult to talk about mental health, consider sharing how you’re feeling. By opening up, the person will feel safe and more comfortable, as well as understood. This doesn’t have to be a mental health problem (you might not be experiencing one), it can be anything that worries you. Sharing any worries will let them know that it’s okay to talk about their feelings and problems.

Go for a coffee

Going out for a coffee is a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy a chill day out. It’s also one of the best ways to catch up with a friend or family member, and you can have a chat in a relaxed, comfortable setting.

This is why talking about mental health is important and the ways you can start a conversation.
