Travelling is a great way to see the world around us. Not only do you enjoy the scenery, you also experience new cultures and meet new people. One of the ways people do this is by going backpacking! By going backpacking, you can travel to many different places. If you’re thinking about going on a backpacking journey and it’s your first time, here are some travel tips for beginner backpackers.

However, during times like this, you should research your destination and check for any travel advice to stay safe. The government has a section on their website for foreign travel advice depending on the country you want to go to.

Make sure you pack light

To avoid becoming the Hunchback of Notre Dame, packing light is necessary. Since you can’t bring all of the things you want, it’s important to only bring the essentials. Create a list of the essentials you think you might need and pack half of it. You need to make sure that all of these items can fit in your backpack, but make sure you pack underwear, a towel and some socks too!

Pack medication

It’s easy for beginner backpackers to go overboard. You can end up doing reckless activities and taking care of yourself goes to the back of your mind. This can result in illness, which is something you want to avoid when you’re trying to enjoy your trip. So, make sure you pack essential medication such as paracetamol, anti-allergy tablets or cold and flu tablets. If you have to take certain medicine, ensure that this is packed before you travel.

Set yourself a rough budget

When travelling, it’s always important to have spending money. At the end of the day, you don’t want to travel to a different country and not enjoy the luxuries offered. You’ll miss out on lifelong memories and you won’t be able to truly enjoy yourself. So, know what you’d like to spend your money on and set yourself a rough budget. However, don’t beat yourself up if you go over it and just enjoy the moment.

Visit the local tourism office

Although you can search for events online, it’s always a good idea to visit the local tourism office. By doing this, you’re in the know about events happening last minute, free activities and any discounts. This will make your stay and experience better, and can even help you save money! If you have no Wi-Fi connection, the local tourism office is your best friend for local information. Blogger Dumitru Brinzan has compiled a list of the tourism offices from all over the world.

Tell your bank you’re going abroad

Before you leave to go on your journey, make sure you tell your bank. As we all know, banks take protective measures to ensure that our accounts are safe, especially from identity theft. If you go overseas and use your card, it may come under as a ‘suspicious transaction’. By telling your bank, they will put a note on your account and you can rest assured your account is still available to use on the other side of the world.

Invest in a mobile Wi-Fi

To stay in touch with family and friends, buying a portable Wi-Fi is another useful tip for beginner backpackers. This allows you to search online if you need to and is a great way to maintain your online presence in case of emergencies. Of course, you’re also going to need it if you want other people to see the amazing photos you’ve taken!

Search for public Wi-Fi

If you don’t want to get a mobile Wi-Fi or if there are complications with your mobile Wi-Fi device, you can connect to the Internet by familiarising yourself with public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi can usually be found in most fast food places such as McDonald’s, Burger King and Starbucks. You should also try to see whether you can find free Wi-Fi in shopping centres.

Don’t be afraid to use a map

We’ve all seen people take out their good old maps whenever they’re lost, but don’t be afraid to do the same if you end up becoming lost yourself. After arriving at your destination, it’s handy to buy a map straight away or you can purchase a map on the country you’re going to beforehand. You’ll thank yourself if you ever reach a fork in the road and don’t know which path to take.
