Latest government figures show that 11,800 jobs have been protected through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, with Government grants covering 80 per cent of people’s wages, up to £2,500 a month.

And 4,800 self-employed people in South Thanet are receiving grants worth a total of £13.4m from the Government to help with the impact of Coronavirus.

The Government’s top priority has always been to support people, protect jobs and businesses through this crisis, and the furlough and self-employment schemes have been a lifeline for millions of people and businesses across the country.

Commenting, Craig Mackinlay MP, said:

“This is a hugely challenging time for people and businesses, and the Government’s schemes have helped to protect the livelihoods of thousands of people in South Thanet.

“This country has a world-leading economic response to coronavirus. And as we move through the current stage of our roadmap to recovery, we are determined to kick-start the engine of our economy while continuing to provide flexible support to those who need it.

“We have done everything we can to support workers through this extremely challenging period.

“With death rates and infection rates much lower and continuing to fall, we are re-opening further parts of the economy.  But, as we do, we all must continue to stay alert to the virus.”

By midnight on 5 July 2020, 9.4 million jobs nationally had been furloughed and 2.6 million applications had been made through the Self Employed Income Support Scheme.
