Thanet District Council reflect on Demon Dayz Festival

Saturday 10th June saw 15,000 people come to sunny Margate to enjoy the Demon Dayz festival at Dreamland. Cllr Brimm, our Cabinet Member for Operational Services, reflects on the weekends festivities.

“Following this hugely sucessful festival, I wanted to pause and reflect on just how much work goes on behind the scenes to coordinate such a large scale event.

The Events Safety Advisory Group, which is a multi-agency team comprising of representatives from Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, NHS, Kent County Council Highways Agency, EKHR Health and Safety, South East Coast Ambulance Service, RNLI, the Coastguard as well as relevant Thanet District Council departments, facilitated a staggering 386 events last year!

It is fantastic to see such a vast range of talents, skills and disciplines all coming together to safeguard the safety and wellbeing of thousands of visitors as well as deliver the all-important post event clean up.

Our street cleansing team worked until 2am to ensure the beaches in Margate looked spotless and it was brilliant to see so much praise for them on social media. The mood in the town was excited, buoyant and certainly back to its heyday.”

On the day, Thanet District Council officers:

  • Formed part of an Event Liaison Team
  • Provided round the clock cover for additional street and beach cleansing
  • Assisted the organisers with help and support in the operational control room to ensure everything went smoothly
  • Kept a regular check on CCTV throughout the night
  • Ensured toilets on the seafront were clean and open all night
  • Provided on call cover across council departments to ensure a rapid response could be provided in the event of an incident, e.g. parking enforcement
  • Received no noise complaints
