Spooktacular fun at the Beaney for Halloween

A day of spooky half term fun for all the family is on offer at the Beaney for Halloween in Canterbury on Friday 26 October as the museum gets in the Hallowe’en spirit.

‘Fright at the Museum’ runs from midday to 8.30pm and will see the entire Beaney turned into a haunted house with a Victoriana look and feel for one day only.

There will be a variety of activities, including pumpkin carving, hands-on investigations of some of the Beaney’s spookiest artefacts, the black cauldron bar serving a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and a special Hallowe’en menu in the Beaney café. There will also be prizes for the scariest fancy dress.

And already up and running is a ghost hunt trail with a mystery to solve based on clues around the building. It features the fictional case of Edith Miller, who mysteriously disappeared in 1904. Objects seem to be moving and there are reports of a ghostly figure. Just what is going on?

A large framed portrait of Edith is currently hanging in the café. Everyone who completes the trail and solves the mystery will be entered into a draw to win a Samsung Galaxy tablet.

Admission to the museum is free, but as this is a fundraising event for the Beaney, there are charges for the events and the trail. Proceeds will go towards future exhibitions, lifelong learning and community engagement projects.

The city council’s Head of Commercial and Cultural Development, Caroline Cooper, said: “We’re excited to see the Beaney being transformed into a haunted house, and have put together a fantastic range of activities for everybody to enjoy, from toddlers all the way up to mums and dads.

“With entrance to the Beaney remaining free all year round, it is important for us to try and raise funds where we can.”
