As part of Silver Sunday, a national day to celebrate older people, held this year on Sunday 4 October, 150 Burgess Hill residents have received gift bags from Burgess Hill Town Council and Burgess Hill District Lions Club. Partner agencies U3A, Age UK, Mid Sussex Older People’s Council (MSOPC), Neighbourly Care, and the Salvation Army were invited to nominate older residents who have been shielded or isolated over the last few months, and the bags were delivered on 1 and 2 October. Burgess Hill Youth also supported with the assembly and delivery of the bags.

Much of the content was kindly donated from local businesses and organisations, including chocolate bars from Waitrose, hand soap from MSOPC, cake bars from Lizzie’s Food Factory, potted winter bulbs and wrapped gifts from Burgess Hill Girls school, and the bags themselves were donated by Silvas Café. The rest of the content was funded through the Covid Support Fund set up by Burgess Hill Town Council and Burgess Hill District Lions Club to support the Burgess Hill community through the Covid-19 pandemic. The bags also included a hand-drawn card or letter from students at Birchwood Grove Primary School, as part of a project to engage with their local community.

Councillor Kathy Willis, Chair of Burgess Hill Town Council’s Community Engagement Key Area Group said “At this difficult time, when so many activities for older residents have been cancelled, it is very important that we maintain this contact and show how much we appreciate and care for our town’s older residents. I am very grateful to all of the groups who have helped with the Silver Sunday gifts.”

Lions Treasurer, Chris Thomas-Atkin said “The gift bags will be a welcome treat I am sure for those members of our community who have been shielding during the pandemic. It is vital that we reach out to people who are being isolated to show them our care and support during these difficult times.”

Gill, a recipient of the Silver Sunday gift bag said: ‘Thank you very much to the Town Council and Lions for this lovely gift bag, it had made my day.’
