‘Rent A Cup’ scheme in Medway by The Rainham Eco Hub

This month sees the first ‘Rent A Cup’ scheme in Medway happening here in Rainham launched by ‘The Rainham Eco Hub’. We are excited to be partnered with the lovely ‘Nutmegs Patisserie’, trialing this scheme for three months starting 1st October 2020.

The ‘Eco Hub’ was formed in April 2020; our mission to make Rainham both greener and improve sustainability. In addition to creating that wonderful community spirit we all have seen beautifully displayed during lockdown! It’s been so encouraging to see our town pull together; and we can’t wait to see the same enthusiasm for our environment!

With this in mind; we have been engaging with local businesses, schools, residents and organisations to tackle this climate emergency together, if your not already talking to us and want to explore ways in which we could work together please do get in touch.

During lockdown it has become more apparent that those nasty throw away disposables are sadly becoming the ‘norm’ again. In a bid to tackle this; an inspiring volunteer stumbled across a ‘Rent A Cup’ scheme, which we have seen trialed in whitstable with some encouraging success. According to Shrewsbury cup 7 million single use cups get used every day with less than 1% being successfully recycled.  It’s a really simple and effective way of saying NO to throwaways- let us explain…

You want to buy a speedy drink in your favourite place in Rainham; sure, it’s easy! Just buy your usual takeaway beverage from ‘Nutmegs’ and ask for a ‘Rent A Cup’ for and extra £1; walking out with a smile and a sense of pride! Not only a little treat for you (not forgetting a cheeky cake perhaps!), you have supported a local business PLUS saving the planet at the same time- you’re awesome! Go you!

When you are finished; popping back the same day for another cheeky drink or when you are next in town- pop back into ‘Nutmegs’ and you receive your £1 back; while washing up, the staff do a little celebratory dance! All because you are doing an amazing contribution to your local town! Not only that, saving a sad disposable Cup from a pointless 15 minute useable life before being dumped into a miserable life of certain doom in landfill!
