Newhaven has an exciting new project for businesses

Newhaven

Local businesses and entrepreneurs are being invited to attend a virtual briefing about a potential new project on Railway Quay in Newhaven.

A new project that is planned for the site would involve shipping containers being used to create the Railway Quay Hub. It is hoped that these would be used for an information hub for visitors, a cafe or refreshment facility for residents and visitors and a space for cycle hire.

The online event is on September 25th and individuals or organisations with experience in food and beverage, sustainable travel or those who are passionate about Newhaven and its regeneration are invited to attend.

Leader of Lewes District Council, Cllr James MacCleary, said: “We are looking for brilliant individuals and organisations that could help us deliver this exciting project and so I encourage you to come along to our online event to hear more about the opportunities to be involved.

“Getting this key site developed for the town is a big priority for us. As a Newhaven resident, I’m really looking forward to having a coffee next to the river next year.”

Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, said: “Having my office in Newhaven I know that we have many fantastic businesses and entrepreneurs here who could really make the Railway Quay Hub a fantastic place for local residents and visitors. I would encourage anyone with an interest to attend the online event to find out more.”

Chris Ketley, Chair of the Town Deal Board, added: “We are hopeful that this proposed project will be funded by money from The Towns Fund. The government grant would provide a fantastic opportunity to regenerate the site and we are looking forward to hearing from local business owners and entrepreneurs that would like to get involved.”

Railway Quay has a long industrial heritage and was purchased by Lewes District Council through Local Growth Funding in 2017. It is one of the eight sites that make up the Newhaven Enterprise Zone which is committed to generating economic growth within the town.
