A bit about Rochester

Rochester is a town in Medway with a population of 67,274 (2021 census).

For many years Rochester was a favourite of Charles Dickens who based many of his novels on the area. This is why the town celebrates two annual Dickens Festivals in June and December.

The Diocese of Rochester is the second oldest in England, centred on Rochester Cathedral and responsible for the founding of The King’s School which is recognised as being the second oldest continuously running school in the world.

Rochester’s annual Sweeps Festival recreates the joy and laughter enjoyed by chimney sweeps at their traditional holiday. It was the one time of the year that the sweeps could leave the soot behind and have some fun. The Sweeps holiday was traditionally held on 1^st May. Locally, they used to mark the occasion by staging a procession through the streets of Rochester.

Rochester has several secondary schools in the town including the Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School (all boys’ grammar school), The Thomas Aveling School and Rochester Grammar School. In addition to this, the town has two boarding schools; The Kings School and Rochester Independent College.

There are numerous historic buildings in the town of which the most prominent are the Guildhall, the Corn Exchange, Restoration House and, of course, Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral.

Rochester United FC were founded in 1982 and currently play their football in the Southern Counties East League. The clubs most successful period came in the 2007-08 season when they were crowned champions of the Kent County League Division One East, also winning the Les Leckie Cup, the Floodlight Cup and finishing runners-up in the Inter-Regional Challenge cup.

Alongside Charles Dickens, notable residents of Rochester include sibling actors Dame Sybil and Russell Thorndike, Admiral of the Medway Sir Peter Buck, World War II veteran Major-General Denis Redman and model, actor and media personality Kelly Brook.
