Lord Mayor to raise flag in support of Armed Forces Day

The Lord Mayor of Canterbury will help mark the outstanding contribution of the Armed Forces at a flag raising ceremony this weekend.

The event, which has been organised by the Royal British Legion and Canterbury City Council as part of Armed Forces Day, offers a chance for local people to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.

The Lord Mayor, Cllr Terry Westgate will raise the flag in the Dane John Gardens at 10 am on Saturday 29 June and anyone is welcome to attend and show their support.

The event comes as part of the council’s ongoing work as the lead organisation for the Armed Forces Covenant in the district, which helps to support those who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces and their families.

The Covenant states all service men and women should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve or served with their lives.

To support this, the council hosts a representative from the Armed Forces charity SSAFA in reception every Friday morning to help former service personnel access the support they need, help them secure housing, apply for benefits and find out where they can get a discount for goods and services.
