Where should the Invicta engine stay?

Canterbury City Council are calling for members of the public to submit their views on where the Invicta engine should be located.

The Invicta engine was delivered to Whitstable by sea in 1830 and operated on part of the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway (known as the Crab and Winkle Line), where it pulled the world’s first scheduled passenger train on the Whitstable leg of the journey to Canterbury.

The engine is currently situated in the Poor Priests’ Hospital in Canterbury. Last year councillors decided to repurpose that building and to relocate some exhibits.

Councillors agreed the Invicta should return to Whitstable and are considering two locations. To help them make an informed decision, they want to hear where you think the engine should be located.

On the web page for the topic they list the logistics of housing the engine at each site: https://news.canterbury.gov.uk/where-should-we-locate-the-invicta-engine/

Have your say

Give them your views by completing the questionnaire by 5pm on Sunday 29 April. They will consider all the comments they receive and make a decision later in 2018.

A query has been raised with them about why they ask people to tell them where they are from in the survey and whether they are weighting the results.

The only reason this is included is to allow them to look at results by different groups to see if opinions differ.  For example, it may be that people who live in Whitstable express a different overall view to those who visit the town. They welcome responses from all sections of the community, regardless of whether they live in Whitstable, elsewhere in the district or indeed outside of the district.

No additional weight will be placed on one group over another when analysing the results. All views will carry equal weight. It will be for city councillors to decide which option to proceed with based on the results of the consultation, and it is for them to decide how much weight to place on views expressed.
