Decision postponed on St Mary’s Island parking.

A decision has been made to postpone the implementation of parking restrictions on St Mary’s Island.

A consultation on a proposal to implement parking restrictions on St Mary’s Island has been postponed until further notice.

A number of residents had raised concerns about parking issues on the island and, in response to these concerns, Medway Council explored running a consultation to ask residents whether they would like a controlled parking zone on St Mary’s Island. However, unfortunately due to financial pressures it is no longer possible to progress a residents’ parking scheme in this area during the current financial year.

The council has therefore taken the difficult decision of suspending all further work on the consultation.

They are in the process of contacting all households on St Mary’s Island to formally advise them of this decision.

Ruth Du-Lieu, Assistant Director of Frontline Services at Medway Council, said: “I appreciate this will be disappointing news for the residents who raised and supported the need for parking restrictions. Although we are now not progressing a residents’ parking permit scheme, we will continue to work with residents in areas where they have highlighted there are specific parking issues which may benefit from single or double yellow lines.”

All motorists are reminded of their responsibility to park appropriately on St Mary’s Island and across Medway. Parking enforcement officers carry out regular patrols across Medway and will issue a fixed penalty notice to anyone found parking illegally.
