The Livewell Child recipe competition, which aims to get kids cooking, have announced their winner.

A recipe competition, run by Livewell Child, to get kids cooking in the kitchen has awarded first prize to Jessica Green, aged 8, from Howbridge Juniors in Witham.

An innovative pilot project called Livewell Child, now in its second year, is all about working with children and their families, via their schools, to help increase physical activity amongst children and to encourage healthy eating.

The recipe competition was open to all children from the ten schools involved in the project. Children were asked to submit recipes they have helped prepare and cook with their families and that are healthy.

The overall winning recipe was a super healthy Grilled Chicken Salad. Jessica chose the recipe because it was simple and easy for other children to cook too. “It’s healthy because it has all the food groups in it and it is nutritious.”

John Krischock, Programme Manager for Livewell Child said, “The recipe competition is just one of the ways we are engaging with children and their families to encourage a healthier approach to food.  Research has shown that children who have been involved in the choosing, preparing and cooking of food are more likely to try new, healthier foods at mealtimes.”

Jessica won her own Livewell cooking apron, a Livewell goodie bag, a free family swim session courtesy of Fusion Lifestyle and a free activity session at Sky Ropes in Great Notley Country Park, courtesy of Essex County Council Parks.
