Kent-wide campaign to reduce single-use plastics

This week, 13 Kent councils, including Kent County Council, will be uniting to reduce single-use plastics across the county.

The local authorities are releasing a Facebook campaign across their channels including a competition showcasing reusable items as a viable alternative to single-use plastic.

The week-long initiative will use vintage imagery and nostalgic messaging to ‘remember’ how people carried reusable items before the advent of single-use plastics in the late 1950s.

Most Kent councils are also launching a competition on Monday (February 17) offering one of 10 reusable goody bags worth over £50.

The competition will aim to educate and engage residents so they can reduce their plastic footprint by switching to using reusable coffee cups, water bottles, shopping bags and lunch boxes.

All you have to do is comment on this Facebook post for your chance to win a reusable goody bag containing a Chilly’s bottle, KeepCup and set of Beeswax wraps.

KCC Cabinet Member for Environment Susan Carey said: “KCC is committed to the environment and we have been working for many years to embed policies that will help our planet.

“Within our own offices we no longer have sachets for sauces, salt and pepper and sugar, replacing them with glass jars.

“Plastic cutlery and take away boxes have been eradicated and replaced with biodegradable alternatives and we offer reusable hot drinks cups to avoid the use of disposable ones.

“I hope this campaign will inspire people to take a look at their use of single-use plastics and see what changes could be made to help the environment.

“My family uses bees wax paper as an alternative to plastic wrap. I find it just as good in keeping things fresh and it can be cleaned and used over and over again.”

The competition runs from Monday, February 17 to Friday, February 21.
