Keeping Romsey on its feet

Two new classes aimed at helping people over 65 to improve their strength and balance are starting in Romsey in November.

Steady and Strong classes and Steady and Strong Dance are part of a Hampshire County Council programme supporting older people to lead independent and active lives. 

Councillor Judith Grajewski, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Public Health, said, “Older people often lose the strength and stability they need for everyday movements such as getting in and out of the car, walking upstairs or picking something up from the floor. It’s so important to keep active as you get older and these very popular weekly classes not only keep people mobile but are a great place to make new friends.”   

Falls in older people can result in loss of independence. Steady and Strong classes are designed to underpin everyday activities and to safeguard against the risk of falling by improving muscle strength and stability. The classes incorporate movements in both seated and standing positions, with chair support for those who require it. Instructors are specially trained to teach exercises which help to prevent falls in older people.

Steady and Strong, Tuesdays at Romsey Rapids from 11am-12pm, starting on 5 November.

Steady and Strong Dance is an innovative programme introduced by Hampshire County Council, in partnership with The Point, Eastleigh. The classes combine the movements used in regular Steady and Strong classes with the creativity and energy of dance.
