Harbour Board seeks new independent member

Canterbury City Council is searching for a new independent member to join Whitstable Harbour Board.

The new member will join seven city councillors and two other independent members in being responsible for providing strategic direction for the harbour and implementing its strategy for the future.

Applicants must have an interest in public service and be committed to developing the harbour as a financially self-supporting operation while balancing the interests of different harbour uses. Proven skills in marine operations, property development, tourism/leisure or finance will be particularly welcomed.

There are around six board meetings a year together with occasional working groups where required. There is no salary, but independent board members receive a modest allowance and appropriate expenses.

The council’s Director of Finance and Procurement, Lisa Fillery, is the senior officer responsible for the harbour.

She said: “Whitstable Harbour is thriving, with a growing number of leisure uses complementing the traditional fishing industry and the aggregates operation on the east quay.

“It’s a really exciting time to join the Board, with the development of the south quay shed underway and our ambitious plans to be a carbon neutral harbour. We want Whitstable to be a role model for other ports and harbours in renewable energy production.

“If you have the skills we’re looking for in a Board member, we’d be very keen to hear from you.”

For more information, go to the council’s website. The closing date for applications is Monday 25 November.
