Funding success at Windmill Community Gardens

Windmill Community Gardens

Millmead Children’s Centre has successfully secured funding for Windmill Community Gardens in Dane Valley Margate from the Big Lottery Reaching Communities fund.

This will enable us to continue to deliver our current programmes and services as well as supporting new developments planned from 2019 -2022.

“This is particularly good news for the local community and across Thanet” Jan Collins Chair of Millmead Children’s Centre

Windmill Community Gardens was developed 14 years ago from a few disused allotments into a flourishing community garden and market garden on two separate 1 acre sites. The gardens also received a gold award from Kent Wildlife trust in 2018 in recognition of its involvement of people from the local community in wildlife conservation

All are welcome to come and join us at our various courses and sessions which include: chemical free weekly veg box scheme, wildlife conservation, cooking, making preserves and pressing fresh juices, beekeeping and groups for the whole community to attend and enjoy learning whilst gardening in an organic community garden.

Welcome to Windmill Community Gardens Margate, a thriving community hub located in the heart of Thanet. Established in 2004, this hidden gem is composed of two one-acre sites (a community garden and a market garden) that were transformed from derelict wasteland allotments after local families requested “Somewhere safe to grow food with their children”.

Our community garden is a truly magical place, featuring a community growing space, accessible pathway, forest garden, poly tunnel, kitchen, wildlife habitats and much more. Our market garden is a chemical-free food growing space that includes no-dig beds, an apiary, vegetable, herb, and edible flower beds which supply the weekly vegetable bag scheme, our market stall, and local restaurants all year round.

Our vision is to improve the physical and mental health, wellbeing, and community cohesion of our visitors through educational and environmental activities as well as offering access to locally grown, chemical-free food.
