Find out more about final phase of scheme to make Buckskin more resilient to flooding

Hampshire County Council is inviting local residents to meet the contractor and find out more about the arrangements that will be in place during the final phase of a scheme to make Buckskin more resilient to flooding in the future.

Councillor Rob Humby, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council said: “I’m glad to see we’ve reached the final part of this major engineering scheme which will help make Buckskin more resilient to the impact of flooding – the conclusion of a great deal of collaborative working with partners and the community to find a solution.  The work involved in this final phase will be done in stretches to minimise the impact on local residents during construction, and I’d urge people to come along on the 6 November to find out more.”

Hampshire County Council has appointed Dyer and Butler to carry out the works, and they, along with members of the Flood Action Group, will be available to talk to residents on 6 November between 4pm and 8pm at the Ridgeway Community Centre, Basingstoke, RG22 5BN.

The £6.24 million flood alleviation scheme in Buckskin has so far seen improvements to ditches and culverts along Churchill Way West and Worting Road, and the enhancement of ditches in Saunders Field to improve drainage of floodwater between Buckskin and the start of the River Loddon. Work is underway on the installation of a pipe across the subway near McDonalds at the Leisure Park to connect drainage works undertaken previously, which is due for completion in November.

The final phase of the scheme is due to start in November and scheduled to be completed during the Summer of 2020.  This work includes the installation of new drainage to collect and connect rising ground water from between houses in the Buckskin area to a new surface water pipe. The pipe will be installed between the Ridgeway Centre on the Buckskin Estate and the start of the existing ditch to the north of Worting Road Roundabout.

Areas of Buckskin suffered the most extensive property flooding in Hampshire after intensive and prolonged rainfall during the winter of 2013/14. This overwhelmed the drainage system including the public foul sewer network. The County Council took steps to convene a multi-agency group to work together to carry out a programme of maintenance improvements while working on the design of a major flood mitigation scheme. This was coordinated and led by Hampshire County Council, and included representatives from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, the Environment Agency, Sovereign Housing, South East Water and Thames Water.
