Whitstable & Tankerton Remembered

Whitstable & Tankerton Remembered is a group on Facebook which highlights and showcases our community of bygone years and is thriving with discussion, content and piquing interest.

CommunityAd has had the pleasure of speaking to the page’s creator in a previous issue and we thought it was time to check in with Andy Maybourne once again.

So, Andy, the group has continued to rise in popularity and numbers since we last spoke, you must be proud?

I am very pleased that so many people enjoy, contribute and comment on the posts. It makes the few hours a week I put into the group worthwhile as I do not get paid to do it. The group is just a hobby that has grown beyond all my expectations. Current membership is more than 5700 and some dedicated contributors post very interesting items that would otherwise be tucked away in drawers and attics unseen by most of us. Without those contributors, the group would not be as large or busy as it is and I am very grateful to those people. I am also grateful to those who comment or even just show their appreciation by liking the posts.

For those still unaware what’s the purpose of the group and why should readers consider joining Whitstable & Tankerton Remembered?

The ‘about’ tagline sums it up really. ‘Remembering the place, the personalities and events that shaped the area, please add your own photos and memories’. Several great groups deal with current issues, lost & found pets, bank cards, keys etc. sunsets, local planning and politics. Shops opening and closing all that sort of thing. W&TR is really for items say from before 2010, although that is not set in stone. Local events, posts that support the area’s heritage are welcome such as those supporting the Castle and are removed after the event. No commercial advertising is accepted, there are other groups for that.

Loving the undated cards you’ve been uploading lately, such variety…

I have a large collection of cards and I post a few now and again if the group is quiet with posts. If others are posting I save them for those quiet periods. Postcards are a great way to look back into the area in days past. A real snapshot of a moment in time if you like.

Anyone is welcome to join the group even if they are new to the area or have nothing to post. I and many others have learned so much from the group of the area’s history, hopefully others will too.

Get involved and discover Tankerton and Whitstable’s wonderful past @Whitstable & Tankerton Remembered.
