Essex County Council Adult Social Care Team halve delayed transfer of care rate in less than two years
Essex County Council’s Adult Social Care Team and its NHS partners are celebrating after latest figures show delayed transfer of care (DTOC) rates in the county have halved in less than two years.
A delayed transfer of care (DTOC) from NHS-funded acute or non-acute care occurs when an adult patient aged 18 or over is ready to go home and is still occupying a bed.
In May 2017 the number of people in every 100,000 of the adult county population who were experiencing delayed transfer of care stood at 5.
Latest NHS England DTOC figures released for February 2019 show that rate now stands at 2.5 people per 100,000 of the adult population in the county. Provisional figures for March 2019 show the rate has dropped even further to 1.75 people per 100,000 of the adult population in the county.
This means there were 1,400 fewer delays in moving people out of NHS-funded care in the last 12 months up to February 2019 than in the 12 months before.
This improvement is a direct result of closer coordination between Essex County Council and its partner organisations to reduce the number of patients experiencing delayed transfer of care.
Essex compares favourably to the DTOC rate in the Eastern region, which includes Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. The DTOC rate for the Eastern region in February 2019 now stands at 3.1, also down from 5 in May 2017.
Nationally, the DTOC rate in February 2019 was 3, another figure with which Essex compares favourably at 2.5 per cent.
Essex, Eastern region and national rates have all shown an improving trend since May 2017.
Cllr John Spence, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Health & Adult Social Care, applauded the hard work which has gone into this improvement in the DTOC rate in Essex.
Cllr Spence said: “This result is among the best in England.
“It reflects the excellent working relationships developed between ECC and the NHS and the outstanding work undertaken by our expert dedicated social care teams.”
