Demolition smashes recycling targets ahead of new homes

The demolition of disused offices in Newhaven to make way for 13 new affordable homes has achieved unprecedented recycling success.

Some 98.71% of demolition waste from Lewes District Council’s development in Fort Road has been recycled or reused, with only 1.29% sent to landfill. The recycling figure includes 30 tonnes of clean demolition hard core, 40 tonnes of reclaimed bricks, three tonnes of clean timber and a tonne of glass.

Councillor Matthew Bird, Cabinet Member for Sustainability and part of the Co-operative Alliance at Lewes District Council, praised the contractor that carried out this part of the project, saying: “This is a fantastic effort by OSM Construction and one we hope will be replicated across other developments.

“Reusing materials and encouraging the circular economy is a big part of our sustainability agenda and our drive to net zero carbon by 2030.”

Once this phase is complete, six two-bedroom and seven one-bedroom apartments will be built on the site using a pioneering modular system.

All of the new homes are set to benefit from a range of sustainability features including the latest solar panels that will feed the energy into hi-tech batteries, effectively taking the homes ‘off-grid’, potentially for up to three months of the year.

Boutique Modern, a specialist manufacturer of modular homes in Newhaven, will supply the homes. The firm designs and builds the properties in their local factory before moving them to the site for installation.
