Council agrees investment in ‘much loved’ bandstand

On Monday, 16 March, Cabinet councillors approved a £3million investment in Eastbourne’s iconic bandstand.

An exposed position on the seafront and recent storms have taken their toll on the 85-year-old structure.

Councillor Margaret Bannister, Cabinet member for Tourism and Leisure Services, said: “Eastbourne Bandstand is hugely popular with visitors and residents alike, with well over 50,000 people enjoying performances there every year.

“We must make this investment now in order to keep our much-loved attraction open.”

Phase one works were undertaken several years ago to replace the bandstand’s roof, and this second phase will focus on improving the water-tightness of the bandstand itself, replacing the stage, as well as repairs to the arena and the promenade in the immediate area.

A subsequent programme of work will address repairs needed in the longer-term and a survey has outlined potential costs of up to £8million for this, including the £3million just approved by Cabinet.

Under phase two, early temporary works will be carried out before the start of this year’s season and main works will begin after the season ends.

Councillor Bannister added: “We are scheduling these works around our busy summer entertainment programme so that disruption is kept to a minimum.”
The £3million for priority works is being funded through the council’s capital programme. Meanwhile, plans for a heritage contribution on ticket sales have been approved which could help fund future improvements.
