Community-backed scheme set to improve on-street parking and pedestrian access

‘This scheme will improve parking, and extend footway connectivity along the edge of the Village Green’.

A community-backed improvement scheme starts soon in Durbans Road, Wisborough Green, between the A272 and Kirdford Road crossroads.

The £60,000 project will extend the western layby northwards by 20 metres, add a new 20 metre layby opposite on the eastern side, provide associated lengths of new footway, and a new uncontrolled crossing point to the north of those laybys. The crossing point replaces the one in the layby which will be removed. An improved uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point will also be provided across Kirdford Road.

A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “This scheme will improve parking, and extend footway connectivity along the edge of the Village Green with better defined places for pedestrians to cross.

“The proposals were requested and agreed by Wisborough Green Parish Council through the county council’s Community Highway Scheme and supported by the local county councillor.”

Subject to factors, such as severe weather, work is scheduled to take place from week commencing 17 February and running to 13 March 2020.

Temporary traffic management will be in place for the safety of road users and the workforce, with Durbans Road closed between the A272 and Kirdford Road junction to all through-traffic, which will be diverted via the A272, B2133 and Newpound Lane.  The only exception being that the contractor will escort scheduled school service transport through the works twice in the morning and afternoon.

In addition, during the first week of 17 to 21 February, which is school half-term, there will be multi-way temporary traffic signals at the Kirdford Road, Newpound Road junctions with Durbans Road.

The spokesperson added: “Every effort will be made to try to minimise the impact of the project, however, some delays and inconvenience can be expected. Highway users are asked to proceed with care and follow the temporary traffic signing.”

Access for residents within closed areas will be maintained, although lengths of footway may be temporarily closed where works are underway and pedestrians will be redirected to use available alternatives.
