New counselling service for the Canterbury district in the pipeline

City Impact is developing a new counselling service for the Canterbury district, which it aims to launch in the autumn. City Impact Counselling will provide an affordable service to ensure counselling is available to all adults who want it. We aim to empower and support people to cope with difficult or painful situations they are experiencing and to improve their mental wellbeing, helping local residents to get back on their feet after the difficulties of 2020 by providing safe places and expertise to help them work through their problems.

City Impact Counselling is being set up in response to the mental health crisis in our society today that has been further fuelled by the Covid pandemic. The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said recently “It’s a monumental thing that’s overhanging us. We have a national case of PTSD in one sense, which will show itself.” From discussions with existing counselling providers across the district we know that demand for counselling has risen dramatically during the pandemic and one organisation now has a 10 month waiting list, so the new service will be a welcome addition to what’s currently available.

Michelle Huggins, City Impact Director, said “Asking for help when you are feeling low is hard enough. We want to make it possible for people to access professional counselling, the first time they ask and at a cost they can afford. It will take time for us all to recover from the pandemic. This counselling service is one important piece of the jigsaw.”

The City Impact team are busy applying for grants and looking for sponsorship to fund the new service and have also started a crowdfunding appeal via Spacehive. Please have a look at https://www.spacehive.com/cityimpactcounselling#/idea and donate if you can. Thank you!
