Bring pumpkins back to life with Swale Borough Council’s recycling scheme

Bring pumpkins back to life with recycling scheme

It will be less tricky to treat your family with a pumpkin this Halloween, with the return of Swale Borough Council’s pumpkin recycling scheme.

Special pumpkin recycling sites will be set up over Halloween in a bid by the council to reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill.

Pumpkins can also be left out next to your black and orange food waste bin on your collection day for collection.

The pumpkins will be collected and composted locally at the Countrystyle composting facility at Ridham, so they will be used to help grow more plants and crops.

Cllr David Simmons, cabinet member for environmental and rural affairs, said:

“With more and more people carving pumpkins each year it’s a scary thought to think that they might end up in landfill.

“This service worked well last year, and compliments our usual kerbside food waste collection.

“It’s just another thing we are doing to try to support good recycling habits, so please make sure to drop your leftover pumpkin at one of our dedicated pumpkin recycling sites or put it out beside your food waste caddy.”

The pumpkin recycling sites will be operating from from Friday 27 October, until Monday, 6 November, at:

  • Bank Street car park in Faversham
  • Sittingbourne Library car park in Central Avenue
  • Rose Street car park in Sheerness.
