Best Ever IB Successes in 2019 for Dartford Grammar

Dartford Grammar School students are celebrating outstanding IB Diploma results. Their average point score of 36.7 points is the highest achieved by students at the school and is well above the world average of 29.62.

Sarah Brett-Smith and Dan Bui both achieved a perfect score of 45 points. These results will take Sarah, who joined the sixth form from St Thomas More RC School in Eltham, to Durham to study English Literature, while Dan who joined Dartford in Year 7 from The Gateway Primary School in Dartford, will go to Girton College, Cambridge, to study Modern and Medieval Languages. They are part of a very select group of 210 out of the 160,000 students world-wide taking the IB Diploma this year who achieved full marks.

Sarah Brett-Smith said, ‘I was very surprised, very happy and very grateful to DGS when I opened my results to see I had achieved 45 points!  The two years I have spent at the school have been so enjoyable and I cannot thank the staff enough for creating a school environment that has been so encouraging’.

Dan Bui said, ‘After two years of exciting academic challenges studying the IB, I’m really glad that the support from my teachers and all the revision paid off! Doing subjects I was deeply passionate about certainly helped me achieve in the IB and I’m excited to continue learning languages at university.’

Two other students, Emma Tolhurst and Antonio Mariani, gained 44 points. 24% of the cohort gained a world-class score of 40 points or more and 42% achieved 38 points or more (equivalent to 3 A* and an A at A level).

The IB Diploma continues to be a popular choice for aspirational, ambitious young people. All of our 295 students gained the prestigious IB diploma which requires success in English, Maths, a Science, a Foreign Language and a humanity. The students have also enjoyed a Creativity Activity and Service programme which includes service to the community. This demonstrates students’ versatility with the Diploma Programme preparing them for a wide range of opportunities in the future. 11 students have secured Oxbridge places and at least 13 will study Medicine, including 6 who will take up places at Imperial College, London.

Headmaster, John Oakes, said, ‘We were delighted in 2017 when the average point score reached 36 points. To have exceeded this is testament to the hard work of students, fine young people who understand the importance of an international curriculum, and to dedicated teachers who inspire them. We are very pleased that as a result of studying this rigorous and rewarding programme our students have been able to do so well and to gain places at so many top universities.’
