India House in Margate open to the public as part of Heritage Open Day 2017 this Saturday!

Boys & Maughan are opening the doors of India House to the public on Saturday 9 September to mark its 250th anniversary as part of Margate’s Heritage Open Day events.

Grade II* listed, India House is one of the finest and most unusual buildings in Margate. If you are curious to see inside the offices of Boys & Maughan there’s no need to book – all are welcome. They will be open from 10am to 4pm.

The history of India House begins in 1763 when a “green or piece or parcel of pasture land…containing by estimation two acres” was leased for a year by Richard Henneker of Margate, a butcher by trade, to Captain John Gould, a gentleman of Margate, for ten shillings.

Four years later in 1767 India House was completed and occupied by Captain Gould. He was a tea planter who made his fortune in Calcutta and is often described as the earliest recorded example of somebody retiring to the seaside.

Skip forward to 1901 and gaiety girl Phyllis Broughton was the sole occupier of India House when the census was taken. Boys & Maughan will be displaying a collection of family photographs of her home from this time.

If you would like to ask any questions before your visit email Ian Priston. The address is India House, Hawley Street, Margate, CT9 IPZ.
