Kent County Council has committed a further £250,000 to help fight rogue traders flytipping in the county.

The funding will continue to build on the close work with district and borough councils, Kent Police and other partners through the Kent Resource Partnership.

Part of the funding is being used for Business Waste: Your Duty of Care, a course designed to help people whose business requires them to dispose of waste to understand their legal obligations.

KCC Cabinet Member for Environment Susan Carey said: “This money is paying for extra enforcement and a campaign to inform householders and businesses of their responsibilities around waste disposal.

“KCC has committed to a further £250,000 from this April to continue this work with local businesses as well as funding enforcement technology.

“This includes cameras, trackers and SmartWater, a special fluid which can be placed on any item and traced. These tools are being used to monitor flytipping hot spots or target known offenders where a sting operation could be used.

“The new course is proving popular with businesses, with the most recent one attracting 70 attendees.

“We are also developing an online course for waste carriers who have committed first-time offences.”

Courses have already taken place in Canterbury, Maidstone, Ashford, Folkestone, Thanet and Gravesham.

Further courses will take place in Swale in April, Tonbridge and Malling in May and Tunbridge Wells in July. Courses will also run in Dartford Sevenoaks, and Canterbury later this year.
