World Suicide Prevention Day

Eastbourne Borough Council will be supporting World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September.

Across the world over 800,000 people die as a result of suicide every year; in the UK in 2017 there were 5,821 suicides. The World Suicide Prevention Day campaign is all about showing people you don’t have to be a GP or other medical professional to check in with someone you are concerned about.

The key thing is having the confidence to start a conversation with anyone you think needs help.

Eastbourne Borough Council is launching a suicide awareness course on 10 September that will help staff identify the warning signs and gives them the confidence to provide initial support.

Councillor David Tutt, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, said:

“I’m sure there are very few of us who haven’t been touched by suicide through the tragic loss of someone we know. In these terrible circumstances it’s a natural response to reflect on what more could have been done.

“I hope that World Suicide Prevention Day starts a debate that will lead to greater understanding of a subject that many are reluctant to discuss.”
