World Book day 2020

Life can be pretty busy and hectic at times, reading a book can often seem like an impossible task to fit in and many people don’t enjoy reading or find it hard to find a good book to get stuck into; however, reading is so important especially for young children and World Book Day is the perfect opportunity to encourage children and young adults to explore their favourite books, authors and fall in love with characters.

World Book Day is on the 5th March 2020 and is celebrating its 23rd year. The registered charity is on a mission to give every young child and young person in the UK and Ireland a book of their own. The day celebrates authors, illustrators, books and the importance and enjoyment of reading; it is brilliantly marked in over 100 countries worldwide.

Every year schools all over the country primary schools and secondary schools take part in the day celebrating by dressing up as their favourite fictional characters. World book day provides resource packs for schools and send out National Book tokens for some 15 million, in fact: that’s one for nearly every child aged under eighteen in the country.

They work with National Book Tokens Ltd, publishers and booksellers, allowing them to send millions of book tokens to children who can then go to participating bookshops/retailers that are taking part in the day.

In Folkestone, there are a number of supermarkets including the Waterstones on Sandgate road and Tesco on Cheriton high street taking part in World Book Day this year. There is also a brilliant scheme with libraries that will encourage more people to use their local library, with exciting programmes that the libraries can get involved with on World Book Day. There will be a library membership drive, with library joining forms included in the school’s packs to nurseries, primary and secondary schools and opportunities for schools and libraries to work together.
