Work to get underway on new secondary school in New Year as investment in Colchester continues

Construction is set to begin on a new 900-place secondary school in Colchester early in the New Year.

Essex County Council spent about £12.6 million on creating 600 extra secondary school places in the area for September 2017, with expansion projects completed at both The Stanway School and Philip Morant School and College.
However, with Colchester’s population continuing to grow and larger cohorts beginning to move through from primary to secondary school, the council is now pressing ahead with other secondary school schemes.
One of those is a new 900-place secondary school on the former Alderman Blaxill School site in Paxman Avenue.

Local contractor, Barnes Construction has been appointed to carry out the demolition of the old school, which is now underway, and the construction of the new school which, subject to planning processes, will start in February.
The project will take around 20 months and, when complete in autumn 2019, the new building, which has been designed by Concertus, will house more than 20 classrooms, a sports hall, library and a suite of science labs and technology workshops.
Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “Colchester continues to grow rapidly, and we are firmly committed to ensuring the area has the infrastructure it needs to support that growth.
“We have already spent £30million on primary school projects in Colchester since September 2014, as well as £12.6 million on creating more secondary school places in the borough for September 2017.
“With larger cohorts now beginning to move through from primary to secondary school, it is important that investment continues, and we are planning to spend about £230 million on projects across the county over the next three years, including a number in Colchester.
“I am delighted such good progress is now being made on the Paxman Avenue site and look forward to construction starting in the New Year.”
