Winner of the ‘Make Their Mark’ project for the HSBC UK | National Circuit Championships has been announced

Local primary schoolchildren were encouraged to get creative and help decorate the route for the circuit championships 2019, which took place in Rochester on Sunday 21 July.

Medway school pupils were challenged to create a colourful welcome for Britain’s top riders by decorating large silhouettes of a racing cyclist. All submitted designs to the Make Your Mark competition was then featured on the 1.6km cycling route, which started and finished on the Esplanade.

As one of the highlights of the national road racing calendar, the championships attracted thousands of local residents and cycling enthusiasts to Rochester’s cobbled streets, with Rochester Castle providing a dramatic backdrop to the event.

The finished designs reflected Medway’s heritage and history, cycling, and each school’s colours and aspirations. The designs have been judged by Luke Anderson from British Cycling, Sarah Tranter, chair of the Rochester Forum and members of the public.

The winning design was created by The Pilgrim School in Rochester who have won a coaching and activity session with a specialist British Cycling Go-Ride coach at their school.

The schoolchildren’s designs were also admired by the elite riders, club riders and by thousands of spectators who attended the event.

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all local primary schools who took part in the Make Your Mark project and produced some fantastic designs which were placed around the race route for the HSBC UK | National Circuit Championships on Sunday, 21 July. Congratulations to The Pilgrim School who were voted as the winners of the challenge.”
