Water, water, everywhere…. free drinking water in Lewes

Cabinet councillors have welcomed proposals that could see free drinking water in skate parks, council parks and other public spaces within Lewes District.

The environmental initiatives include match-funding for the provision of free drinking water in Newhaven Skate Park and the consideration of similar in Malling skate park, a feasibility study to assess the viability of free water in other parks and public spaces across the district, a commitment to support the national ‘Refill’ campaign and to investigate investment in infrastructure to allow electric vehicle charging.

Councillor Isabelle Linington, Cabinet Member for Environmental Impact, said:

“While we have moved forward with various environmental commitments, such as our aim to become a single use plastic free council by December 2018, this list of proposals is far more ambitious and far reaching.

“I’m also delighted that our progress is underpinned by a cross-party determination to achieve more in the district and I’m particularly grateful to Councillor Tony Rowell for his very constructive contributions to this debate.”

The council has earmarked £5,000 to provide drinking water in Newhaven skate park and is assessing the viability of introducing the same facility in Malling stake park.

Councillor Linington added:

“With the government planning to ban the sale of combustion engine vehicles by 2040 we have to make much greater provision for the use of electric cars and other similar types of vehicle.  To this end, we’re going to examine how a scheme could work within council owned locations, particularly in areas where there is limited residential off-street parking.”
