Walk to Work Day 2019 – Friday 5th April 2019

If it takes an hour to walk, or ten minutes to drive, who can honestly say they would make the extra effort and choose to walk to work?  Well, Walk to Work Day is all about encouraging the healthier option.  The initiative was first promoted in 2004 by Prevention magazine and is consistently celebrated (unofficially) by people throughout the world.

There is a wealth of environmental and health benefits to consider when it comes to the humble walk.  For starters, it’s thoroughly good exercise.

10,000 steps (about 5 miles) is regarded as a sufficient amount to walk per day to benefit substantially health-wise and by walking to work, there and back, by the time you’ve returned home you will have potentially passed the 5-mile mark, or if not, be well on the way to achieving it.  Of course, this all depends on your location from work, but even if you are only a mile away and you decide to walk, you’ll have done 2 miles more walking than you normally would have had you driven or used public transport, and that could be the extra lift (perhaps) you need to do some more walking after work to hit a target you might’ve set yourself.

If you leave the car at home, you will automatically be improving your carbon footprint.  Circumstance says that it would be very difficult for all of us to walk to work everyday what with; taking the kids to school, the need to go shopping after work, seeing the in-laws, etc.  The list is could go on and on.  So it’s completely understandable if the car is often needed.  However, once a week, once a month, or even once every two months, if as many of us as possible occasionally made the effort to use our legs and walk to work, this would have an incredibly positive impact on the environment and the health of us all in general.

Walk to Work Day is on the 5th April this year (it’s always the first Friday of every month).  So in two days time, why not enjoy the benefits of waking up a bit earlier, feel the sun, wind, rain, or whatever weather awaits you on your face, enjoy the time to reflect on things you have, and get some good, solid exercise!
