Walk to School month winners revealed

Children across Medway have been praised for taking part in a national walking campaign.

Medway Council supported national ‘Walk to School Month’ in October in partnership with the KM Charity Team and encouraged local schools and academies to take part.

The campaign encourages children to be more active each day in a fun and innovative way and aims to reduce the number of car journeys on the school run.

More than 20 schools and academies across Medway took part and completed 57,374 journeys. Primary schools took part in the Hedgehog Hike and secondary schools competed in the Social Netwalk.

St Michael’s RC Primary School in Chatham have been named the winners of the primary school competition with 97.1 per cent of pupils who walked to school.

The winners of the Social Network challenge were Greenacre Academy in Walderslade. More than 75 per cent of pupil walked to school during the challenge.

Deanwood Primary School in Rainham were named the most improved school by achieving a 36 per cent increase in the number of pupils walking to school during the campaign, compared to last year.

Michael Edwards, Head of Integrated Transport at Medway Council, said: “Congratulations to everyone who took part in Walk to School month. The challenge aims to not only encourage children to become more active but to also reduce the number of cars on our roads during the school run. It is fantastic that so many children and young people took part and I would encourage them to continue to walk to and from school.”
