Avoid drying out your paint

One tip to remember is to avoid drying out your paint, which can happen if you have a half-empty can left out in the open. To avoid this, you can place clingfilm underneath the lid. You should then make sure that it’s tightly sealed, placing the paint can upside down afterwards.

Make sure you’re using the correct primer

Using the correct primer is also essential. If your wall is a drywall, a water-based primer is best since it will conceal any imperfections and will make sure the surface is even. If you have panelled or water-damaged walls, an oil-based primer is best.

Try to avoid lap marks

When doing interior painting, lap marks should be avoided. Lap marks are differences in colour on a wall, which occurs when dry and wet layers of paint overlap. To avoid lap marks, make sure you maintain a wet edge. You can do this by painting the height of your wall first and overlapping the last stroke with the next one. However, make sure you’ve only moved slightly when adding another stroke of paint.

Make sure you stir your paint

This is also important when doing any interior painting since paint ingredients can separate. To avoid this, make sure you stir your paint before and during the painting process. By stirring your paint, you’re ensuring that the colour and consistency will have a great end result. You can also drill some holes into the stirrer to help the paint mix thoroughly.

Avoid washing your brushes and rollers

You’re probably used to washing brushes right after you use them, but try to avoid this when you’re painting your rooms. You should especially avoid washing them if you’re using latex paint and you haven’t completed painting your wall yet. Instead of cleaning your brushes or rollers afterwards, place them in a plastic bag inside your fridge. This is because latex paint doesn’t dry out quickly if it’s exposed to cold temperature. If you don’t have a plastic bag, you can wrap it in tin foil instead.
