Cut your energy bill this Big Energy Saving Week! Lasting until the 23rd of January, this national campaign’s goal is to “help and encourage people to save energy while cutting down on fuel costs” this winter. Created by Citizens Advice after partnering with the Energy Saving Trust, this week focuses on giving clients energy advice to help them save. If you’d like to participate in this campaign and save money on your energy bill, have a read through the following energy saving tips!

Cover up any draughts

Draughts are the most common causes of heat loss and you’ll usually notice them when you’re near doors, windows or any gaps in your home. This will result in an increase in your energy bill, which is definitely something you want to avoid. You can get rid of any draughts by draught-proofing your home, which may cost around £200, according to experts. However, this will certainly help you save money in the long run. Alternatively, you can consider investing in a draught sealer and excluder. Shops such as Screwfix have a variety of options you can choose from.

Consider replacing your boiler

If you have a particularly old boiler, they might be inefficient when compared to new ones. You should definitely think about upgrading if your boiler is more than 10 years old. If this is something you’re considering, have a read through the Different Boiler Types for Your Home and Combination Boilers: Everything You Need to Know, which might be helpful. For advice, our boiler professionals and plumbing and heating experts can answer any of your questions!

Undergo pipe insulation

Another way to reduce heat loss, which will ultimately help you save, is by insulating your pipes throughout the winter period. By doing this, the water stays hotter and you won’t have to use a lot of energy to heat it up! This is usually a tube made out of foam and is wrapped around the pipes found in between your boiler and hot water cylinder. Experts state that you save around £10 a year with pipe insulation, so what are you waiting for? Head over to your local Screwfix or contact your local heating expert for more information!

Make sure to turn off your appliances

It may be alright to leave your appliances on standby mode once in a while, but less energy is used if you turn them off. So, make sure you turn off your appliances at the plug if you don’t think you’ll be using it frequently. However, do ensure that appliances such as your fridge and other smart technologies are left on.

Make sure you turn down your thermostat

We all know the purpose of a thermostat: your heating is turned on until it reaches the temperature you’ve set it to. According to experts, the ideal thermostat setting is between 18-21°C. Remember not to turn your thermostat up, even when it starts to get chilly outside since it will heat your home up by itself until it reaches the desired temperature. By turning it down, however, you’re reducing your heating bills and carbon footprint.
