Three Canterbury parks achieve Green Flag success

Canterbury district is celebrating a prestigious hat-trick of Green Flag awards in time for Love Parks Week 2018.

The Westgate Parks in Canterbury received the Green Flag award for the second year running, while closer to the coast, Duncan Down in Whitstable wins for the 13th successive year and Reculver Country Park regains its award after a year off.

The Green Flag is a national scheme that seeks to recognise parks and public green spaces that have high standards of management, follow environmentally-friendly practices and involve the community to create attractive places for people and wildlife to enjoy.

Chairman of the city council’s Community Committee, Cllr Neil Baker, said:

“It’s great news for the district that three of our most loved open spaces have received this recognition. Lots of hard work goes into looking after them, so these awards are well deserved.

“I would particularly like to thank the volunteer groups we work so closely with – the Friends of Westgate Parks and the Friends of Duncan Down. Their contribution to this success cannot be underestimated and we are very grateful for all they do.”

Reculver Country Park has been winning Green Flags since 2003 but took a break in 2017 while the council invested in new parking facilities and a refurbished visitor centre, which opened last August. These enhancements were in addition to the popular play area which opened to the public back in May 2016.

The council is currently advertising a seasonal tent or glamping concession at Reculver and is seeking an operator for a quality offer that include yurts, safari tents and camping pods and dens, or combinations of these.
