Teaching children how to be safe

Hundreds of children have been learning about being safe in a range of different situations at an event part-funded by Folkestone & Hythe District Council.

The council provided funding of £3,500 towards the Safety In Action interactive workshops for 689 year six children from local schools at the Three Hills Sports Park in Folkestone.

The sessions last week (24 to 27 February 2020) have been teaching children about avoiding potentially dangerous situations and dealing with the issues they may face as they become more independent and prepare for transition to secondary school.

After visiting the event Cllr Jenny Hollingsbee, Cabinet Member for Communities at Folkestone & Hythe District Council, said: “The range of activities was fantastic and it was great to see how engaged the children were and how much they interacted with those presenting the workshops in terms of the questions that they asked..

“This is a hugely worthwhile and project and I would like to thank all those who have given their time to give some very important safety advice to children from across the district.”

Organised by Salus, an Ashford-based organisation which offers a range of programmes for young people, the children took part in different safety scenarios, including drugs and alcohol awareness, online safety, fire safety and first aid.

The workshops, which take place all over the county, are also supported by Kent Police, British Transport Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, the RNLI, Kent County Council and other organisations.
