Take Action this Dementia Action Week
Dementia Action Week runs from May 21-27 and Kent County Council (KCC) is urging residents to do their part to help people with the condition.
Whether it’s reaching out to someone with dementia or rallying your town or village to make local facilities more accessible, every action makes a difference this Dementia Action Week to the 21,000 people in the county with the disorder.
During the campaign, KCC will be working with the Kent Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) to highlight the condition through activities including information events, fun days and sports taster sessions.
Graham Gibbens, cabinet member for adult social care, said: “Thanks to the hard work and support provided by Kent’s many support groups and services, people can continue to live well with dementia.
“I am grateful to everyone who has lent their support to Dementia Action Week and who are working so hard to raise awareness about the condition and the range of activities available.
“Many of the events featured this week are regular activities and are available throughout the year.”
This year events include:
Dover: On May 25, Dover Town Council will be hosting a free event for businesses to discuss the advantages of becoming dementia friendly
Sandwich: On May 23, the DAA will be hosting a Dementia Roadshow at Ash Village Hall
Tonbridge: On May 23 Angels Football Club Stadium will be hosting a virtual dementia tour, giving participants a taste of what dementia might be like
Thanet: On May 26 Thanet DAA and the Thanet Business Network are planning to scale the equivalent height of Mount Everest on the stairs adjacent to the Ramsgate Tunnels main entrance.
As part of the campaign, and to celebrate the DAA’s fifth anniversary, KCC is encouraging groups to create a ‘Forest of Thoughts’.
Volunteers will be building trees which will be decorated with mementoes and messages created by people affected by dementia.
They will be displayed at the Dementia Friendly Kent Awards in October.
Dementia is an umbrella term for disorders caused by brain disease or injury. It can cause memory loss, personality changes and impaired reasoning.
In Kent there about 21,000 living with the condition and this is expected to rise to 25,000 by 2020.
Dementia and Alzheimer disease is now the leading cause of death in England and Wales, accounting for 12% of all deaths registered.

| Dartford | May 21-25 | Darent Valley Hospital will be hosting a Dementia Information Stand and a number of other charities each day from 10am-4pm. A memory tree will be on display in the hospital café. |

May 21 | Dementia Friends Information Sessions will be held at Christ Church in High Street from 11.30am and at Inspirations Hair Salon at 182 High Street from 1.30pm. Each Information Session lasts around one hour. |
| Faversham | May 22, 25, 26 | Faversham, Dementia Action Alliance partners will be hosting a Charity Stall in the marketplace during all three of the Market Days in the town. They will have a memory tree on their stall on which visitors can add their thoughts. |
| Tonbridge | May 22 | A Dementia Wellbeing Event will be held from 10.30am – 3pm in Christ Church, High Street with a market place of dementia services |
| Sheerness | May 22 | A Dementia Friends Session will be held in the meeting room Rosemary House. 43 Trinity Road from 1.30. Register your attendance at [email protected]. |
| Ashford | May 22-23 | Ashford and Canterbury DAA will be displaying a memory tree at the Ashford One you shop in Park Mall.
Ashford’s Mayor will be visiting the shop on May 23 at 10.30am |
| Ash | May 23 | The Dementia Awareness Roadshow will be at Ash Village Hall in Queens Road from 10am to noon. |
| Eastry | May 23 | Sandwich’s Dementia Action Alliance will be holding a roadshow at Eastry Village Hall in High Street from 2pm – 3pm. |

| Dover | May 25 | From noon – 2pm a Dementia Awareness Session for Businesses will be held at Maison Dieu House in Biggin Street, Dover. |
| Edenbridge | May 25 | The Eden Valley Museum will be bringing objects to their collection to Edenbridge Forget-Me-Not Café for visitors to handle from 10.30am – noon. |
| Thanet | May 26 | Thanet DAA and the Thanet Business Network are planning to scale the equivalent height of Mt. Everest on the stairs adjacent to the Ramsgate Tunnels main entrance. Twenty people will climb the steps 24.5 times. A Dementia Friends Session will be held at the same time. |
