Swale Heritage Forum & Conference ‘Our Shared Heritage’

On Saturday 21st March 2020, there will be a unique opportunity for you to delve into Swale’s History and Heritage…for Historic Swale CIO together with Swale Borough Council will be presenting a Swale Heritage Forum and Conference event, entitled ‘Our Shared Heritage’ at the Appleyard, in the Avenue of Remembrance, Sittingbourne, ME10 4DE, previously known as the UK Paper Leisure Club.  The conference will be formally opened by Cllr Roger Truelove.

The topics being covered by speakers who include historians and local councillors, will explore all aspects of our shared history from pre-history up to the modern era across Swale; it includes all the areas within Faversham, Sittingbourne and the Isle of Sheppey, which should prove to be an interesting and fascinating day (9.30am to 4.30pm).  There will be various heritage related stalls in the smaller ‘Sapling’ hall that the public will be able to visit free of charge to find out more about the various history groups and museums.

Cllr Mike Baldock – Swale Borough Council ‘Heritage Champion’ who will also be one of the 17 speakers at the conference said, “I welcome this exciting development in the promotion and understanding of Swale’s diverse and fascinating history. This type of cross-disciplinary Conference opens the way to future co-operation between the many groups active in our Borough.”

Richard Emmett – Chair of the Historic Swale CIO said, “This conference is aimed at members of the community who have an interest in their local heritage who want to understand more about it…  and hope it will be of interest to all the community.  The conference will be covering topics such as the geology and landscape of the area, barges, bricks, paper, railways, the defence of swale, which have all shaped our local history.”
