Sports Minister praises council’s senior sports activities

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch has praised Medway Council’s senior sports activities for older residents.

The council were pleased to welcome her to Strood Sports Centre on Friday, 20 April.

Medway’s sports centres offer a range of classes and senior sports activities tailored for older residents including badminton, short mat bowls, chairfit and aerobics.

Residents aged 60 and above can also swim for free at Medway ParkStrood Sports CentreHoo Sports CentreSplashes Pool and The Strand with a free swimming card.

During her visit Ms Crouch watched a walking football session and spoke with the group who meet each Friday at the centre in Watling Street.

She said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see how the council through its leisure centres are helping support older people to stay fit and healthy.”

Chris Pocock, spokesman for Medway Marauders FC, who play walking football at Strood Sports Centre, said: “We were pleased to meet Tracey and talk to her about the sport. I’ve been playing walking football for four years and we all love playing it.”

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “We were pleased to welcome Tracey Crouch to Strood Sports Centre. We have excellent sporting facilities in Medway for residents of all ages to enjoy. Our senior sports sessions are very popular and I would encourage residents to come along and give them a try.”
