The nation’s top male and female road cyclists will be taking to the streets of Rochester this weekend as they compete in the HSBC UK | National Circuit Championships.

In December 2019, British Cycling announced that Rochester in Medway had been selected to host the event, which is one of the highlights of the national road racing calendar.

Medway Council has been working closely with British Cycling to get plans in place to welcome thousands of cyclists and spectators from across the country to Rochester on Sunday, 21 July.

The event’s title sponsor is HSBC UK, and Medway Council has announced that the three official sponsors for the national event are the KM Media Group, University of Kent and Rochester Riverside, the £419million landmark regeneration scheme being delivered by Countryside and Hyde.

Medway schoolchildren are also showing their support for the HSBC UK | National Circuit Championships and have been busy decorating large silhouettes of a racing cyclist which will be lined along the 1.6km cycling route.

Historic Rochester Castle will provide a stunning backdrop for the race route, which was announced by British Cycling in June. The circuit will start and finish on the Esplanade, initially heading south before making a sharp left onto Baker’s Walk. Riders will make their way down Vines Lane and Crow Lane, before coming back towards the castle via the High Street and past the cathedral.

Councillor Howard Doe, Deputy Leader of Medway Council and Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “We are delighted to have the KM Media Group, University of Kent and Rochester Riverside developers Countryside and Hyde on board as official sponsors and supporting such a fantastic event.

“Medway has a long history when it comes to hosting cycling events, from the days when Bradley Wiggins competed in a criterium in Chatham to when the area hosted a stage of the Tour de France. We are privileged to be hosting another prestigious national cycling event and are looking forward to seeing thousands of spectators cheering on the elite riders.”

Geraldine Allinson, Chairman of the KM Media Group, said: “KM Media Group is a Medway based regional media business serving the populations of Kent and Medway. Reaching over 1 million people each week, we operate lnewspapers including “Medway Messenger”, digital properties led by KentOnline and the kmfm radio network and KMTV. We reflect the communities we serve and we are proud to be associated with Medway Council and British Cycling with this event.”

Andy Fancy, Managing Director, Partnerships South (North & South), Countryside, commented: “We are proud to be supporting such a great event and Rochester, with its historic landmarks, is perfectly placed to host the race.

“We are passionate about creating homes that provide outside space and amenities, ideal for budding sport enthusiasts. At Rochester Riverside we are providing 10 acres of green open space and outdoor play areas to be enjoyed by our cycling stars of the future.”
